Flooding in Old Rajender Nagar: Three Students Dead

Tragic Flooding Incident in Old Rajender Nagar: Three Students Dead, Rescue Operations Underway.

A devastating flood has struck Old Rajender Nagar, leading to a tragic loss of life and ongoing rescue operations. The incident occurred when two and a half feet of water accumulated on the road, flooding the basement of Rau’s IAS Study Circle, a prominent UPSC coaching institute.

The disaster claimed the lives of three students, with authorities still working to identify the victims. According to police sources, rescue teams are diligently searching for any additional students who may be trapped in the basement.

CCTV footage revealed the extent of the flooding, prompting immediate action from emergency services. The Delhi Fire Department received the distress call at 7:19 pm on Saturday. Five fire engines were dispatched to the scene, joined by a team from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).

In a statement, the Delhi Fire Department reported, “Search and rescue operations are underway after water filled the basement of the old Rajender Nagar coaching institute. It is feared that several students are trapped.”

DCP Central M Harshvardhan provided an update on the situation, stating, “In the evening, we came to know that some students are trapped in the basement of a UPSC coaching institute in Rajender Nagar. The road was flooded due to continuous rain. Delhi Fire Service and NDRF rescue teams are present here. Search and rescue operations are ongoing… so far, one body of a female student has been recovered.”

Delhi Water Minister Atishi assured the public that those responsible for the incident would be held accountable. “There are reports of accidents due to heavy rains in Delhi in the evening. The basement of a coaching institute in Rajender Nagar was reported to be flooded. Delhi Fire Department and NDRF are on the spot. The mayor of Delhi and local MLAs are also there. I am receiving updates on the incident every minute. A magistrate has been directed to investigate how the incident took place. Whoever is responsible for this incident will not be spared,” she stated in an X post.

The incident has sparked political controversy, with BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj criticizing Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Rajender Nagar MLA Durgesh Pathak. She accused them of neglecting the local community’s pleas to clean the drainage systems, which may have contributed to the flooding.

As the search and rescue operations continue, the community is left grappling with the tragedy, hoping for the swift recovery of any remaining students and the identification of those who lost their lives.
